About

Darin Bendickson currently resides and works in Stillwater Lake, Nova Scotia. He lives there with his wife Tracy and their two cats.

Born in 1977 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan, Darin spent his youth on the family farm before moving to Calgary, Alberta in 1995 to attend the University of Calgary. Darin focused on printmaking throughout his post-secondary education, and In April of 2000 he graduated with his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree (BFA).

After the completion of his undergraduate career, he promptly moved to Halifax with Tracy. During the transition from student to professional, Darin chose to switch his focus from printmaking to painting - mostly due to a lack of access to printmaking facilities. This transition created the foundation for his current work, as it forced him to apply his printmaking sensibilities to the medium of painting.

Working from past memories and experiences, Darin Bendickson’s mixed-media paintings often begin with an old photograph or textile as the point of departure. Recycling images and patterns from out-dated resources, he then turns the images back on themselves, using them for purposes for which they were not initially intended. Darin groups these components into open-ended narratives, where fragments of the story are hinted at, but completion is left to the viewer. These composed narratives focus on themes of nostalgia, aesthetic beauty, commercialism and self image. Each piece is constructed in a computer-like manner‚ archiving individual elements in their own layer of transparent medium. This procedure also adds a richness of depth to the surface of the piece, inviting the viewer for closer inspection.
